Before the Devil Knows You're Dead by Patricia Eimer

Not Even Death Can Keep a Good Demoness Down

There’s never an end to the crazy when you’re demon spawn. Not that Faith Bettincourt’s complaining. She’s been patching things up with her angelic on-again off-again boyfriend, Matt, and her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ Part Deux. Oh, and Faith is saving kids from Death in her pediatric unit, one soul at a time. Life is good.

Or at least it is until Faith accidentally runs over the Angel of Death and is forced to take his place. Now she’s taking lives instead of saving them. This is kind of a problem when you’re a nurse. As if that weren’t bad enough, she is suddenly thrust into the worst scenario of them all–Matt’s ex is back, and she’s brought the Apocalypse with her.

Faith’s not about to give up the world...or her man. But when the chips are down, what’s a girl to do but take matters in her own hands, consequences be damned?

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for the Speak of the Devil series:

"Patricia Eimer puts a fun, new spin on what it means to be the devil’s daughter!" - Linda Wisdom, National Bestselling Author, Demons Are A Girl’s Best Friend

4 stars. "This book should come with a warning: ‘There’s enough laugh-out-loud high jinks to cause readers to crack a few ribs.’ Eimer’s comical tone flows effortlessly, with saucy flair and a warm charming touch." - Diane Morasco, RT Book Reviews

"Ms. Eimer’s twist on God and the Devil is genius. . . . Luck of the Devil is pure entertainment with satirical religious undertones that yield uncontrollable, giggles-worthy hilarity that simply adds to the fun." - Renee C. Fountain, New York Journal of Books

"Luck of the Devil is a wonderful, feel good paranormal comedy that sucks you in from the beginning (pun completely intended!)." - Karolina Open Book Society

Meet the Author

Patricia Eimer is a small-town girl fated to be a storyteller. After a stint of "thinking practically," she earned degrees in Business and Economics, but her passion has always been a good book. She lives in Pittsburgh with her two kids and a husband who learned the art of frozen pizza to give her more time to write. When she’s not writing she can be found fencing or arguing with her dogs about plot points. Most days the beagle wins, but the dalmatian is a close second. She’s a distant third.

The third book in the Speak of the Devil series is epic - as in end of the world apocalypse epic. Faith just can't seem to keep her life normal - or a least normal for the youngest daughter of Lucifer. Things just keep spiraling out of control and getting even more crazy.

I love Faith more and more with every page. She is such a riot - her entire family is, but she really stands out as such a unique person. A lover of children and a nurse, finding herself the Angel of Death is quite the life changing bummer, but she tries to deal with it. Her way of dealing with it leads to a series of "accidents" and "incidents" that lead to the beginnings of the legendary apocalypse.

Through it all Matt remains loyal - willing to do anything to make their relationship work. He's a great guy, but we really didn't see much of him in this one. We do get to see more of her roommate Lisa and a lot of Howard the ghost. All of these side characters are fantastic in their own way, but when put together the way Patricia Eimer does, they really take off and become very memorable.

This series should be a must read for lovers of snarky, smart-ass, sarcastic demons with a very, very non-traditional family tree. I loved every minute of it.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
    Unique and Hilarious!
I really enjoyed. It was unlike anything I had read before. I laughed out loud a lot and loved all the characters. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves witty banter and a heroine that can’t seem to catch a break, but fight to the bitter end for what right.
    So funny!

Patricia Eimer really has a knack for the humor in her writing.

Patricia Eimer really has a knack for the humor in her writing. She writes incredibly well, and keeps her readers enthralled in the book. Even though the story is about angels and demons, they seem to be living right along with all of us. She actually makes you wonder if it could really be a possibility that they live among us and we just don't know it. I loved the story about this dysfunctional family that has all the same everyday problems we have, with a twist. They are angels, demons, and of course the devil and God himself. It will keep you in stitches, yet so into the story that you don't want to put it down. I loved the book so much, that I had to get the other books in the series she wrote. And of course they don't disappoint. Great job Patricia Eimer, you have found a way to make reading fun!!

Faith is staying pretty busy. She is a demon working as a nurse

Faith is staying pretty busy. She is a demon working as a nurse in a hospital and loves helping people. She is trying to work things out with her angelic boyfriend Matt and help her sister in law prepare for the birth of her child who is the anti christ two. Faith is happy and when she accidentally runs over the Angel of Death she is horrified to find she is now the angel of death and must be the head of the reapers. She never wanted to take lives only save them and she can't touch anyone without killing them. On top of that the Apocalypse seems to be happening and Faith will have to do her best to stop it.

I haven't read the other books in this series but after some confusion at first I figured things out. Faith may be a demon but she really only wants to help people. She has to figure out if she really wants to be with Matt and how much she wants to be out of the Angel of Death job. She has so much going on but she still does a good job trying to take control of things. There is tons of action and intrigue as the Apocalypse is beginning and they have to stop it. There is also lots of humor as several times you will get several laughs while reading. I enjoyed seeing all the characters and learning about them. I would recommend reading the first two so there isn't any confusion but this looks like a good paranormal series that I will be looking more into.

This was a fun, paranormal read.  Nurse Faith, and Angel Matt, have a lot to do.  First, Faith is made the Angel of Death, but nor of her own
choosing.  Next the Apocalypse, occurs and Faith and Matt save the world.  In the meantime, they want to get married, but aren't sure what
to do about it, since Faith can't tough anything without killing it.  How they get around it, and have their Happily Every After, will have you
wanting to read more about Faith and Matt.

The third book in the Speak of the Devil series is an action packed paranormal urban fantasy romance.
Demoness and pediatric nurse Faith Bettincourt is not complaining, life is good; she’s patching things up with her on again off again angelic boyfriend, her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ part deux and she’s saving kids in the pediatric unit from death.  Then she’s forced to take the Angel of Death’s place when she accidentally runs over him, starting a chain of events that starts off the Apocalypse. But Faith’s not about to give up the world – or her man, so what’s a girl supposed to do – take matters into her own hands of course.
This fast and smooth flowing plot keeps the reader on the edge of their seats with lots of suspense, action and romance.  The author brings this story to life with vivid images and details capturing the imagination of the reader.  The characters are mesmerizing and easily related to even if they do have the power to destroy the world as we know it.
There is some romance between Faith and Matt and a couple of other characters which adds depth to this urban fantasy.  The tension builds as the reader follows Faith to not only finds out if she can stop the Apocalypse, but to find out if she gets her man. The story catchers the reader’s attention and doesn’t let go until the very end.
The author has created a fantasy world with a humorous and dramatic twist on mythology that I found to be really enjoyable and refreshingly different from others that I have read.  I love the charming characters and the action scenes are well written and believable.  I haven’t read the first two books…yet, but I was able to figure out what’s what without the author giving too much away.  I am definitely going to read the first two and be on the lookout for more books by Patricia Eimer.

3 1/2 stars Angels are Angels and Demons are Demons, and then there are the "inbetween" like Faith Bettincourt. I love that she is a nurse and works to keep her young wards from Death. That still doesn't stop death from trying, or get her in trouble with those who help souls along the way. She is a demon with a kind streak, and that duality messes up her love life. There just was so much going on with this story, and so many characters that I sometimes got lost, and found it hard to find myself emphasizing with moments that would give me that "oh, no!" feeling. Even so, the characters had character and I loved the action scenes. I received this arc in return for an honest review
