Overview

Another prodigy discovered by Finland's wonder boy Jaakko Salovaara (also known as JS16), Darude (born Ville Virtanen) slowly started to conquer the dance world with two hit singles, "Sandstorm" and "Feel the Beat." Those songs might be very attractive and rhythmic, but unfortunately Darude's debut full-length doesn't succeed quite as well. First of all, the main problem of Before the Storm is its monotony. Its entire content can be easily described by the two hit singles. The rest of album is mostly just a variation of that theme, and it just doesn't work if you're not on a dancefloor. This may be due to Jaakko Salovaara's presence -- JS16's house is also monotonous; with no diversity whatsoever. Whether this is a good thing or not just depends on the context in which one hears the music. Darude's debut album Before the Storm may work well on the dancefloor, but it is virtually impossible to listen to the whole album at home.

Hot dance techno/house tracks. Popular in trendy Detroit and NYC clubs. Great to sweat to.

Smashing dance music and sure to inspire dance floor motion. If it doesn't work in your house try taking it on the road. Solid high speed driving beats.

A common misconception about techno is that it is "repetitive" and only composed of "fake" synthesized noises. A true "techno" fan will tell you that this widespread genre of music encompasses just about every style from technopop to rock to dance to classical-fusion and crossover, the common element being its otherworldly sounds and (often, but not always) catchy beat. That being said, Darude's talent is amazing, even if he does follow tecnho stereotypes in creating a dance album with minimal foyeur into the aforementioned space-age genres. This remains the only downfall of the album, which could have been a breakthrough in the musical world if it incorporated variant styles into its repertoire. Nevertheless, this is dance club techno at its best. There are only a few songs out there by any techno artist that match up to Sandstorm!
