Overview

Whore...gift...and unexpected ally.

In Dagran society, Alex is the lowest of the low-a "mare", an object to be used by the nobility. When her owner, Stephen Garnath, gifts her to his greatest rival, she begins plotting her path to freedom. Nothing and no one will ever control her again. Not her degrading past, and certainly not her growing attraction to a man reputed to be an even crueler master than Garnath.

Robert Demeresna is instantly suspicious of such a generous gift. Yet she comes to him armed with only her sharp mind-a potent weapon he can use to defend his people from the enemy. And underneath, an unbreakable spirit that besieges the walls of his heart.

Slowly, Robert chips away at Alex's defenses, striking sparks that make her begin to believe even a lowly whore like her could be worthy of him. Until Garnath springs a trap so cleverly hidden, war is unleashed before either of them sees it coming. A new kind of war fought with steam engines, explosives-and magic with a killing edge...

Warning: Contains violence, steam engines, steamier sex and multiple explosions of the unstable chemical variety.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“If you enjoy high fantasy, and a truly well written world to sink into, I recommend this story. I’m looking forward to seeing how Marian continues the tale in the next of the trilogy.” ~Vivian Arend.
“I feel like I discovered a hidden gem in this new author. This was a lovely fantasy story with a slow moving romance amid battles and steam machines. The characters are strong minded and interesting, and it left me with things to ponder.” ~janicu’s book blog.

Don't start reading this book before you go to sleep or you'll be awake all night!

Author Marian Perera takes readers on a ride with more twists and turns than Lombard Street in San Francisco. In "Before the Storm" you will find yourself quickly transported to a world where allegiances are held close to the heart and hushed whispers of betrayal hang like tapestries in a hallway. While the story unfolds with the threat of war on the horizon, two souls find one another in an unexpected manner that keeps them both at each other's side, yet worlds away. Ms. Perera wields her words much like her characters wield daggers and swords - with intensity, accuracy and great passion. Quorumlords, Iternans, steam engines and explosives will have you turning page after page as you ignore the clock and continue reading long into the night. Sink into Ms. Perera's creative turn of a phrase and give her free reign over your senses. Even if you don't, you'll find she has captivated you with her character development and descriptive wording. The only thing that would make this book better would be knowing that a sequel is in the works!
