The third in a series that collects songs in their original versions by often unknown artists that later became huge hits for other artists, Before They Were Hits, Vol. 3 presents some fascinating comparisons. The Cookies' original version of "On Broadway," for instance, is much lighter and jazzier than the hit rendition by the Drifters, while Dee Dee Warwick's original "You're No Good" is a good deal spunkier and more taunting than the hit version by Linda Ronstadt. The wry humor of "Mama Told Me Not to Come" is much more apparent in Randy Newman's version than in the hit rendition by Three Dog Night, while Carole King's solo piano demo of "Take Good Care of My Baby" ...
