Overview

Imagine this scenario:

You have decided that you’ve done everything you can do at your current church and it’s time to move on to a new one. In fact, you’ve completed a weekend interview with a prospective church and they’ve offered you the job. You’re excited, but you haven’t officially said “yes” yet.

Later that day you have a coffee meeting with me on your calendar. You come into Starbucks and begin to tell me about your new opportunity. I respond by asking you a few questions about the new church, the interview process, and your mindset as you prepare for a new ministry.

My questions aren’t meant to take away your excitement or talk you out of taking the job. Instead, they’re meant to help you clarify your thinking about the opportunity before you. Maybe they’ll cause you to ask a few more questions of the search team or to go off to a quiet place where you can reflect on what you’re moving toward and what you’re moving away from.

More than anything, I’ll challenge you to make sure you’ve asked and answered the best possible questions.

This book is not for ministers only. I hope search teams and Elder boards will read it as well. I believe it will fund better conversations and lead to deeper levels of discernment among all involved in a minister search process.

Who should read Before You Go?

1. All Minister/Pastor types who are thinking about changing churches. While I’ve written from the perspective a Lead Pastor, it will also be a helpful read for ministers filling other staff roles.

2. Members of search teams looking to improve their search process. It will give search teams insights into what candidates may be thinking throughout the process, as well as some deeper questions to explore during the interview.

3. Ministers who have recently moved to a new church. Much of what is in the book applies to the first year of ministry at a new church too.

4. Church leaders: Elders, Deacons, Staff, Ministry Leaders, and Volunteers. Staff transitions are a critical aspect of church life. Every church leader needs to be aware of the behind-the-scenes complexities described in Before You Go.

5. Anyone making a career transition. Many of the principles in the book apply to other professions and organizations. I’d love to hear how how you are able to apply what you read in Before You Go to your particular situation.

Editorial Reviews

Jay Guin
“I’m no preacher; just an elder — and so the book is kind of a backward read for me. It doesn’t so much speak to my needs as the needs of those I interview. And that’s a very good thing. The book helps me understand where the interviewee is coming from. It might even help me help him avoid making a mistake.”
Jon Mullican
"Wade Hodges is one of the toughest and most introspective ministers I’ve ever known. His ministry proverbs are forged in the furnace of real-life ministry, hammered into usable wisdom by his extraordinary intellect, and sharpened to penetrate the soul through his wit and candor. Every church board and minister search team should read Wade’s book twice; every minister should read it once each year."
Mark Riddle
“It’s fantastic. Wade takes the posture of asking great questions that allow you and the church you are considering employment with to unearth assumptions you both carry about each other. You won’t try to answer all the questions he asks, but the wise pastor will mine this book for questions that fit their circumstances and process. There is absolutely no reason why every pastoral candidate (and church searching) shouldn’t pick up a copy of this book. . .
Mike Cope
“I consider this must reading for ministers—whether they are leaving or not.”
Scot McKnight
“All seminary students need to read this.”
