Is there greed in Raspberry Hill's genes?

In this sequel to Coretta Scott King Honor Book MONEY HUNGRY, once-homeless Raspberry Hill vows never to end up on the streets again. It's been a year since Raspberry's mother threw her hard-earned money out the window like trash, so to Raspberry money equals security and balance. And she's determined to do anything to achieve it.

But when a troubled neighborhood teenager attacks her mother and Raspberry's drug-addicted father returns, Raspberry becomes desperate for her life to change and ends up doing the unthinkable, potentially ruining her friendships and losing her self-respect along the way. Will Raspberry accept that nothing good comes of bad money? Or is she destined to follow in her father's footsteps?

Teenaged Raspberry Hill tries to sort out her confused feelings of disgust, shame, and love for her homeless, drug addicted father and worries that she may have inherited his lying and stealing ways.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
An impoverished teen obsessed with getting money whatever way she can, to build a nest egg for her and her mother, gets herself into trouble. "Touching upon issues of prejudice, street violence, homelessness and identity crises, this poignant novel sustains a delicate balance between gritty reality and dream fulfillment," said PW. Ages 10-up. (July) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
Raspberry lives in the inner city. Her mother is in the hospital because Shiketa, a young juvenile delinquent, hit her in the head with a metal pipe. Add to that the fact that Raspberry's father is a drug addict and you have the makings of a touching story. One strand of the story concerns Raspberry's obsession with money, which for her means security. After she steals money from her best friend, she cannot admit what she has done because, deep down, she is desperately afraid that her theft means she will end up like her father. Eventually, she confronts her fear, develops her courage, and owns up to the theft. Another strand of the story focuses on her mother's struggle to forgive Shiketa and to try to rebuild her life. Flake's writing is masterful and engaging, and Raspberry's growth as a person provides a wonderful role model for teenagers. 2003, Hyperion Books,

    Amazing

This book shows how everybody goes through a few rough patches in their life, but the gotta keep on moving and things will turn out right. This book also has a lot more of a Romantic Comedy feel to it than the first one did.

    Go Raspberry!

This is a great book. It shows how life is for the less fortunate. It tells a story about a girl who was brave, but had a big problem. In the end she realized stealing isn't the answer. Her father is a crack-head and steals from her and her mom. It's a great book. I loved it.

    Loved It !

I loved this book. It did not sugarcoat the realness of real-life situations, which I liked, yet it was not innapropriate.I would give it 4 1/2 stars out of five because I didn't LOVE the ending, but it wasnt bad. I would definately recommend this book.

fantastic review for Begging For Change

The book Begging for Change is a wonderful book based on the struggles of living on the streets. It talks about the heart ache, the pain , and the struggles that Raspberry Hill went through . Her dad left her when she was a little girl. When she finally became a teenager, her dad showed up at here door asking for help. The author Sharon G. Flake is a very powerful writer. She has written many books like Money Hungry, The Skin I¿m In, and Bang. Sharon G. Flake has won many awards like, Best Books for Young Adult Readers, Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, the New York Public Library, and Top Ten Books for the Teen Age. The book Begging For Change is a good book for boys and girls and for all teenage and adult ages. It shows that even when there are times when you would want to leave and quit there is always a way out. This is a wonderful book that reflects on a life that we usually do not see. Hope you read it soon.

    This Book was EXCELLENT!!!

This book was so awesome. When I read this book it was like a movie to me. Raspberry Hill is a trip in this book. And her friend Zora is so annoying. The characters seem so real which makes the book so real and awesome.

    My Kind of Read

I debate with folks all the time about the route that BET is taking. Some say that BET is only selling sex, while I say they are only giving what's sent to them. Publishers are doing the same thing. When all they're getting is fiction writers who seem to love erotica more than a storyline, that's what's put out. But then there's the writers who stick to a good script to sell their story. Whether this book was for young adults or not, I believe the writer has a strong enough talent of telling a story so we don't have to read a porno book. In this book, I find myself grinning at the 'love' scenes and I haven't done that in a very long time with fiction. Simple blushing, first kisses, and shyness with dancing are perfect fun and bring back old memories of my childhood. This is the kind of love scene I want to read...the kind that had substance to it. I love scripts about black young people growing up and dealing with their maturing emotions. A young girl named Raspberry has a thieving crackhead as a father, a dreamer as a mother, and enough male role models to give her beliefs in the sanctity of love. Her friends/associates/enemies have their own set of baggage: dealing with being a bi-racial child, unemployment, and friendships being torn by mistrust. I am just crazy about this author and this book. I didn't remember reading another one of her books 'Skin I'm In' but when I saw it was on my recommendation website, I see why. I'm going to read every last one of the books this writer writes!

    begging for an encore !!!

i finished this book in 1 and a half days . while i was reading a whole bunch of feelings came through me . like how could raspberry do such a thing to her friend . then sato and raspberry have such a good thing going . momma is strong and has people that love her . you can tell that raspberry cared for her father after he stole from her . this book shows that money can turn you into something bad or con you into doing bad things. i never had a favorite author but now i found one its sharon g. flake . i read the skin im in , money hungry and begging for change . they are all good books . i hope that she writes more books for everyone to enjoy -pre teen reader
