Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "My Path to Math" series aims to make math concepts simple and more easily understood. The concrete examples make it easy to understand what otherwise could be somewhat abstract. The text opens with a list of the five steps recommended to solve word problems. An example follows and the word problem is turned into a picture which is an equation. The key words to the five steps are: What, How, Help, Compute, and Check. The examples are followed by activities that reinforce the concepts presented. The author introduces simple one-step word problems and describes what the possible operations might be. Also quite useful is the request to check the reasonableness of an answer. Then there are more complex problems and students are advised to ignore the unimportant information. The complexity increases with two-step word problems which require multiple operations. The test here is to figure out what action to take first. Tips and activities will help students learn to solve these more complex word problems. The end pages include a glossary and a repeat of the steps for solving one and two-step word problems. For parents who may not be familiar with the terminology of today's math, this book can be used to help students learning math and will also be easily understood by an assisting adult.
