Overview

Simplifying the seemingly difficult and expensive art of underwater photography, this accessible investigation outlines the four elements of success: focus, exposure, composition, and subject. Beginning with an overview of necessary diving skills, this survey reviews these four categories in detail, depicting how to obtain superior results even without the latest and greatest equipment. Maintenance and first-aid tactics are presented as well, reducing the chance of disappointing malfunctions during a dive. Also covered is the importance of developing a photography plan beforehand—both for the safety of the divers and the protection of the underwater environment. Concluding with post-shoot techniques for choosing the best frames, cropping photos for printing, and the top methods of presentation, this examination demonstrates how underwater images can be used to share the world of diving while promoting important conservation efforts.

This is the only book I've found that covers all you need to know about getting started in underwater photography in one place. It gives great insight on selecting an underwater camera system that makes sense for you (and your budget), the technical nuts and bolts of taking underwater pictures (exposure, strobe and lens selection) and on the diving/photography techniques get great pictures of your subjects. There are also good tips in there for the more advanced underwater photographers. No matter how many pictures you've taken, there is always something you can learn, or may be something you've forget that this book will bring back. I would highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting into underwater photography. It's best read before you go out and start purchasing all your gear. It will probably pay for itself several times over and, more importantly, point you in the right direction to getting a camera set up that works for you, and getting you to work your camera set up.

I met Larry Gates a couple of years ago when I began SCUBA diving. I've always liked photography and became more and more interested in underwater photography as my SCUBA training advanced. When I first met Larry, he mentioned, in a very humble manner, that he was writing a book, a book for the "regular guy", on underwater photography. Since then I have continued my SCUBA and have begun delving more and more into UW photography. When I found out his book was being published, I was overjoyed--not only for him--but for me and all other beginning UW photographers! I have read his book, and I am so happy to say, Larry spoke the truth--this book is for the "regular guy". Larry does an excellent job of putting into easy-to-understand terms something that has been thought of as difficult (underwater photography). He makes it simple. He makes it easy. He makes it fun. He breaks everything down for the reader, using examples and photographs to demonstrate his points. He truly teaches you that you can do this! You can be an underwater photographer! I would recommend this book to anyone--not only beginners--but anyone who wants to improve their "picture-taking and memory-making" skills. This is a book that I can refer back to time and time again, and it is a must-have book for any UW photographer who is ready to become more than they ever could have imagined.
