    Not the best book available

This book uses Smarty a templating system. They start out using smarty. This confuses the reader with unnecessary material to get a basic e-commerce web site up and running. What they should have done was get a basic e-commerce web site running without a templating systems. This would help the novice greatly see what is involved in an e-commerce web site.
Then once that site is running add the templating material to php to get you into more advanced programming.
I spent many hours trying to get smarty to work with their examples that I eventually just gave up on the book. I can get smarty to work with other examples from other books such as, W. Jason Gilmore Beginning PHP and Mysql From Novice to Professional.
