This is an excellent first book for trauma survivors. In my opinion, the information and coping strategies in this book are relevant to trauma patients who have NOT experienced childhood sexual abuse also. This book is, most importantly, NON-triggering. The "courage to heal" book (written by the same author) although an excellent book, is OVERWHELMING to patients just entering therapy for the first time (it weighs about 5 lbs and looks like an encyclopedia). THIS book, however, can fit in your back pocket purse, is a short book, to the point, non-overwhelming, disarming, gentle but informative, and normalizes the symptoms your patients are feeling (helps them realize they are NOT "going crazy", that they are experiencing what we EXPECT them to experience given their histories. I used this book in clinical and forensic settings and have had all positive reviews from patients- they felt helped, understood, and it was a great supplement to whichever treatment modality they entered (group, case management, individual therapy, etc).
