I found this to be excellent primer. It's highly understandable, but not so basic that it takes up time telling you things you've known since you had your first computer. It also doesn't go through the drudgery of explaining every menu item on every screen. It covers how to install Ubuntu, plus all the basic programs, e-mail, internet, rhythmbox, (audio), Totem (Video), Gimp (Photo's) plus several chapters on OpenOffice applications the built in word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database suite that will come with Ubuntu. The book also covers terminal commands, shell scripting, using the file system as well as system issues like improving performance, backing up etc. Normally, I only buy books on operating systems out of desperation - just in case I need to solve a problem. This book however has been a joy I'm sure it has at least tripled the fun I've had with Ubuntu (To where I'm quite happy to say good-bye forever to Windows and even thinking of abandoning Mac OS X). Ubuntu is a joy if you are considering changing your operating system to Ubuntu this is the right book to get you on your way!
