Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Myrna Dee Marler
For readers in Canada, this is a collection of fourteen short stories about the children of the First Nation, the pioneers and first settlers, prospectors, hunters, Tories fleeing the American Revolution, and railroad workers whose story threads make up part of the tapestry of Canada's past. The book is meant to spark interest in Canada's many beginnings and the people who created the complex civilization that exists in Canada today. Since the readership of the book is presumed to be young, say third to sixth or seventh grade, the stories are not long nor are they very complex. They do present a multitude of points of view, both male and female, from those of the people who were already there, to contract brides, to foundlings sent to a new country to be adopted either as little more than slaves or parts of a new family. The stories only go up to about 1937, thus the newest wave of Canadian immigration is not represented. An interesting way to approach the dry facts of history for young scholars.
