Overview

Begonia's carefree world has been turned upside down. Forced to become the head of her household she has to trade her paintbrush in for a switchblade, and her love of art into a love affair with the hood. Lying, stealing, and turning tricks, Begonia will do any and everything she can to protect her sisters from the ugliness of the world. However, it just isn't enough... When her younger sister Violet, desperate to escape the hell her life has become is seduced by an up and coming Corner boy, and their baby sister Daisy is riddled with disease that could be fatal if not cared for, Begonia is caught between the hard knocks of the streets and the nightmare of her home life. From the critically acclaimed author of Strawberry Mansion comes the tale of Begonia Brown. Raised in the unforgiving streets of North Philadelphia, Begonia Brown is undoubtedly a product of her environment, young, ruthless, and criminally minded.

We were named for the flowers in Grandma's Garden. Begonias, Violets and Daisies, and much like those flowers, we were showered with a love that rivaled sun-rays. We knew nothing of pain, or sorrow, or just how cruel the world could be until the day God saw fit to call Grandma on home. Her heart stopped two weeks after Daisy was born. My mother smoked us homeless two weeks after that. Now with Grandma gone and mommy on a constant crack high, it's up to me to keep our little family together, and you best believe I'll stop at nothing to do just that. My name is Begonia Brown. I am a 17-year-old hustler and this is my story. --JP Simmons

Editorial Reviews

JoeyPinkney.com - Joey Pinkney
Simmons fine-tuned Begonia Brown, both as a book and as a character. To say there is never a dull moment is an understatement. Simmons grabs the reader by the hand with a painful grip and never gives the reader a chance to pull away. Begonia Brown transcends Urban Literature in a way that paints a realistic portrayal of a struggle that is universal and brutally honest. Pulling no punches, Simmons has skillfully penned a heart-wrenching saga.
ARC Reviews - Locksie Locks
Julia Press Simmons did the damn thing with this one. Begonia Brown is a headstrong character that the reader will love! Because of Ms Simmons vivid and precise writing I was able see beyond Begonia's hardened external layers where I found a young woman who gives out tough love and will forgo her own talent and happiness for that of her siblings.

Meet the Author

I love the written word more than cooked food and that's saying a lot. I write because I have to(It's the only way to silence the voices). There is always a story going on in my head so if you see me in public I'll probably be scribbling furiously in a notebook.

Strawberry Mansion, my first novel, is semi autobiographical(I am Tabitha in the story). It was a very painful part of my life that I felt an overwhelming need to give voice to. I've changed a few things to protect the guilty, and add a bit of distance from myself to the story. I love that book. It's a sort of snapshot of my journey into adulthood. Although the characters are young, It's filled with adult content, bad language, sex drugs and rock and roll, you're gonna love it.

Begonia Brown, my sophomore novel, is street fiction at it's finest. I am very proud of this book. It is the hood as I recognize it, minus the glitz and glam... I pushed the envelope with this book. I felt free to tell ugly truths because the book isn't about me, It's about where I come from. Begonia Brown, although it was hard to write, is one helluva ride!

What else is there to say about me? I am a mom, a poet, a nurse, a playwright, a scifi geek, a lover of all things fantasy, a junk food junkie, and a facebook addict.

until next time
Julia

I am sitting here after reading this wonderful story and I have to tell you I am in awe. Author Julia Press Simmons took me on a very emotional journey and I can not wait to see how this great story ends in the next book. Great job and I must say you can truly tell a wonderful story, you make the reader feel each and every emotion that the family goes through. Thank you!

I thoroughly enjoyed this read! In Strawberry Mansion: A Philadelphia Love Story, we get a brief introduction as to who Begonia is. But in this book, which is the second installment of the series, we see that there is so much more to this young girl. She goes to great lengths to protect and preserve her family and I admired her so much for that. If you are looking for a heartfelt read that pulls you into the story from the beginning and allows you to "feel" what the characters are going through, please check this book out. You will not be disappointed! And as this book leaves you wanting more, be sure to also read Violet, Strawberry Mansion 3.

Just finished reading Begonia Brown and I enjoyed it. This was a spin off of Strawberry Mansion, because Begonia was mentioned a few times in that back and this story she is the main character and we are given and insight into her world and the thing that she and her sisters are subjected to. This story was another heartfelt story the author wrote and you cant help but feel bad for Begonia and her sisters. Begonia being the oldest has to take on the role of a mother to her two younger sisters, she does what she has to do to provide for them as much as she can. As you read this you cant help but fee sorry for Begonia at the start of the book she goes through something really bad and it just continues to get bad for her, but she doesnt let it stop her, and even though she is young she deals with grown up situations to try to survive. Violet is the middle sister and she is trying to find her own way, her sister takes care of her and tried to protect her from the things that she is doing so that she will not have to. Does this lead to her focusing more on her school work or does she want to find it on her own? Violet is very young and naive in many ways, she also had to grow up quickly but her sister shelters her from various things. So when Violet gets out into the real world its like something out the movies for her. Will this be her best dream or her worse nightmare? Daisy is the baby sister and I just thought she was a cute little character that helped show the bound the sister have with each other. Read to find out all the drama and issues that these three sisters go through. Will there bond keep them together or will the streets rip them apart. Good read by Julia Press Simmons, she did a good follow up with the first part. There were a few minor editing errors but other than that I enjoyed it. **Nook Readers**

Of course I read the first book in series which I suggest you do. The character's back stories are in the first book (Strawberry Mansion) You have to be a fan of urban books to appreciate the stories. I enjoyed this book as I did the first one and now I'm on to the third.

Book 2 of the series... Author did a great job with this piece really got me to invest and route for the characters. Wanted more but that's why there's a book 3 I suppose. Did a great job at showing the trials and tribulations of kids with a parent on drugs. Not pretty but very real. I'm glad the author did not hold back.
