Overview

This new edition of one of the most popular and highly regarded texts on behavioral and social science in medicine has been fully revised and updated. It is structured to reflect the latest Institute of Medicine recommendations on the teaching of behavioral and social sciences in medicine. Its 25 chapters are divided into five core domains: mind-body interactions in health and disease, patient behavior, the physician's role and behavior, physician-patient interactions, social and cultural issues in health care along with health policy and economics. Under the careful guidance and editing of Danny Wedding, PhD, Professor of Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco, CA, and Margaret L. Stuber, MD, the Jane and Marc Nathanson Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, over 40 leading educators from major medical faculties have contributed to produce the most comprehensible and well-designed text in its field. Unique to Behavior and Medicine is the use of hundreds of works of art, poetry, and aphorisms to provoke thought and interest and to illuminate the most important points. Additional features of note are:
• Practical, clinical emphasis, based around the core topics recommended by the Institute of Medicine
• Comprehensive, trustworthy, and up-to-date
• Competitive price compared to other much less comprehensive, question-andanswer- type, course review works
• Chapters written and carefully edited by leading educators at major medical facilities
• Numerous case examples, tables, charts, and boxes for quick access to information
• Learning and exam aids, such as sample USMLE review questions
• New chapters on medical ethics and the United States health care system A unique textbook, comprehensive and up-to-date, with a practical, clinical emphasis and a structure that is ideally suited for teaching behavioral sciences in the medical school classroom.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Warren Lee Holleman
This is an attractive, interesting book on psychosocial aspects of health, featuring chapters on the various stages of the life cycle; health issues related to love, sexuality, and work; assessing the mental health of patients; and unhealthy behaviors associated with preventable illnesses. Authors from throughout the United States contributed to the volume. The purpose is to describe how behavior affects health and to encourage the reader to practice a more humane, effective style of medicine. This is an extremely important task, considering the way medical education gives insufficient attention to the psychosocial component of health and the therapeutic value of empathy. The book meets this objective. Targeted especially to medical students, the book will be useful to students in other health professions as well, including nursing, public health, psychology, and physician assistants. The most striking feature is the extraordinary number of paintings, photographs, poems, and literary excerpts used effectively to illustrate the themes of the chapters. This second edition has significantly fewer references than the earlier one, appropriate given its purpose of introducing the subject to a broad range of students. The book is an excellent introduction to the psychosocial dimension of health, illness, and medicine. The chapters are written in a compact, clinically relevant, and interesting style that will engage all students, including those seeking a different perspective than the standard one taught in basic sciences and those who generally have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the trough of behavioral medicine.
From The Critics
Despite the suffering evident in the cover art, by Edward Munch, Wedding (psychiatry and neurology, U. of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine) is optimistic about the healing power of art and relationships. The 29 chapters explore healthcare-patient/societal relationships, bases of human behavior, the life cycle, patient issues, decision-making about patients, and behavior and disease. Appends information on assessment, medical statistics and research design, the medicine-literature link; poetry; and the answer key to practice questions. Annotation c. Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM (Columbia College of Missouri)
Description: This expertly written book examines a most relevant and essential topic that crosses all branches of medicine — behavioral science. This is the third edition of a book that countless medical students have found to be essential in their training and preparation for USMLE.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an in-depth examination into the basic principles of behavioral science in medicine. This edition provides a comprehensive primer of psychopathology, new chapters on alternative medicine, cancer, and updated facts, figures, and statistics. As in previous editions, the original structure has been maintained, and this edition is the source for behavioral science board review and for teaching across disciplines. The objectives are unconditionally and unquestionably met by this latest edition.
Audience: Intended mainly for medical students preparing to take the behavioral science portion of the USMLE, this book will easily transition to other disciplines in psychology, nursing, social work, dentistry, and public health and provide for an excellent teaching tool. The author and his contributors are credible and knowledgeable thought leaders in their fields.
Features: This book wisely uses black-and-white illustrations that draw attention to the topics yet do not detract from the material. The Behavioral Science Board Review sample questions are an excellent preview of the USMLE. The key words, text, and phrases of importance are highlighted in bold or italics while case studies, a thorough index, and carefully written text allow for the time-pressured reader to gain not just knowledge but insight and appreciation of the most pertinent topics.
Assessment: This update is a welcome addition and is in keeping with the goals of earlier editions. As both a researcher and educator, I find this book to be not only valuable to medical students but also a notable asset for the teaching of introductory courses such as introductory psychology or psychopathology. I recommend it without reservation.
