Overview

The Behavioral Neuroscience of Drug Addiction highlights important new research using current state-of-the-art approaches by prominent neuroscientists in the addiction field. The preclinical chapters describe animal models used to study the neuroanatomical and neurotransmitter systems implicated in drug craving, neuroplasticity in synaptic physiology associated with drug use, and the role of sensitization and withdrawal processes in addictive behavior. Chapters on human studies emphasize neuroimaging of neurotransmitter and receptor levels in drug-addicted patients, brain responses to drug craving and other cognitive abnormalities. These human studies chapters also describe work on genetic vulnerability to drug addiction, the neuroeconomics of drug consumption, and novel pharmacological approaches to drug abuse treatment. Multiple lines of human and animal research coverage to suggest a growing consensus of neurobiological and behavioural change, while other areas require further work to reconcile important differences and establish mechanistic links. Together, the volume chapters provide focused and critical reviews that span a broad range of topics suitable for both students and established investigators interested in the present state of drug addiction research.
