This is an excellent review book covering topics that are taught in behavioral science and introductory psychiatry courses in medical schools. It book is an outgrowth of recent changes in emphasis on the USMLE, Steps 1 and 2, in which the exam no longer rewards an encyclopedic knowledge of the basic sciences, but tests knowledge of the scientific basis of disease and the ability to apply this information in clinical reasoning. Written by psychiatric educators, the book would be useful for medical students as a supplement to their general psychiatric textbooks. The purpose of this book, according to the authors, is to produce a supplement to standard psychiatric textbooks. The authors believe that the single best choice format and the clinical focus of this book, in contrast to the comprehensiveness of general psychiatry textbooks, requires the reader to weigh information more critically thereby enhancing understanding and recall of information. The authors have succeeded in their purpose. The intended audience is medical students taking behavioral science and introductory psychiatry courses. It would also be informative to clinicians and trainees who want to keep up-to-date in the fundamentals of the field. Topics covered include neurobiology, personality development, diagnosis, childhood disorders, delirium, dementia, psychotic and mood disorders, substance use disorders, anxiety, somatoform, dissociative, eating, and personality disorders, sleep and sleep disorders, and psychotherapy. There are informative tutorials and answers are well explained. The index at the back of the book is helpful to finding specific topics. This is a useful review book for medical students preparingfor the USMLE behavioral science and psychiatry sections and as a supplementary study aid for these courses. I highly recommend it.
