Griffin's seventh novel in The Corps series (after Close Combat) continues the author's breezy look at the Marine Corps during WWII. Here, he uses guerrilla action behind the lines in the Philippines as foreground to tell the behind-the-lines tale of the power struggle among Marine General Fleming Pickering, General Douglas MacArthur and Bill Donovan of the fledgling OSS, all of whom are galvanized into action by a radio message from a self-proclaimed general named Wendell Fertig, who has established himself as a guerrilla leader against the Japanese. As far as the Marines are concerned, once the message is verified, a team of men with supplies will be sent in to evacuate any sick or wounded and evaluate Fertig as a potential leader. Complicating matters, however, are MacArthur's public declaration that guerrilla activity on the Philippines is impossible, and therefore nonexistent, and Bill Donovan's desire to get the operation under OSS control. Focusing on a variety of characters involved in the proposed mission, Griffin tells an absorbing story with his usual attention to dialogue rather than description, relying frequently on his favored device of moving the plot along through copies of memos, radio messages and telegrams. The boy's club aura of Griffin's primarily male world, where everything-even death-seems clear, sunny, bright and uncomplicated, is in full force here; and that should please his fans just fine.

Griffin's twenty-second novel is the seventh in his Marine Corps series. It is set on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines during World War II. The hero is Lieutenant (and later captain) Ken McCoy, a tough marine who speaks fluent Chinese and Japanese. It's his job to lead a group behind enemy lines to check on General Fertig, who has set himself up as a guerrilla leader to harass the Japanese. Griffin mixes fact and fiction, weaving into the plot such World War II personalities as General Douglas MacArthur, Admiral Chester Nimitz, and Colonel Bill Donovan (head of OSS). As always for Griffin, the dialogue is filled with military jargon, and the action is all derring-do. One would think that readers would tire of the genre, but as long as there are wars, there will be war novels and popular war novelists.

Biography

With more than 40 million books in print in more than 10 languages, bestselling novelist W.E.B. Griffin enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a master of the military thriller.

Griffin began his career not as a writer but as a military man like the type he would eventually make millions writing about. After growing up in both New York City and the Philadelphia suburb of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, Griffin took the step in 1946 that -- little did he know at the time -- would set the course for his literary life: He enlisted in the United States Army. After finishing basic training, he went through counterintelligence instruction at Fort Holabird, New Jersey, and was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Germany under Major General I. D. White, commander of the U.S. Constabulary.

In 1951, while attending Philips University, in Marburg an der Lahn, in Germany, Griffin was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He again served under General White, both at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and in Korea, where he earned the Expert Combat Infantry Badge and served as a combat correspondent and as acting X Corps (Group) information officer. Upon his release from active duty in 1953, Griffin was appointed chief of the Publications Division of the Army Signal Aviation Test & Support Activity at the Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Although he first wrote under various pen names, Griffin didn't begin writing his bestselling string of military novels until he was well into his 50s. His first Brotherhood of War novel, The Lieutenants, was published in 1982 and touched off Griffin's well-known reputation for writing with historical accuracy and fascinating detail. Publishers Weekly noted that this first novel "captures the rhythms of WW II army life... in an absorbing account of life among military men." Griffin would go on to pen additional books in the Brotherhood of War sequence and to launch other bestselling series -- including The Corps, Badge of Honor, Honor Bound, and Men at War, among others.

While Griffin's public persona is a bit of an enigma -- he's not one to make the talk show rounds -- it's clear that he both knows and appreciates his readers, especially his fellow military men. On his official web site, Griffin reflects, "Nothing honors me more than a serviceman, veteran, or cop telling me how much he enjoys reading my books."

    HIHLY RECOMMENDED

    This book is for anyone who is interested in what it was really like in both the trenches and at the highest level during some of the darkest hours of WW2. W.E.B. Griffin weaves his characters, the actual major players who made the histoy, actual statements that were made by the major players etc into this book in such a way that makes it very hard to put it down before you have finished reading the book.
    This book is for the reader who is interested in history or military history. I would recommend that for the most enjoyment that the reader start with the first book of the series and contine reading thru to the last book of that series. I hope to have all of his books on my nook in the near future and recommend that any military book club discussion group put this book and any other book by W.E.B Griffin on its book club discussion list

    The Continuing Saga of 'The Corps'

    As a fan of Griffith for well over 20 years and a voracious reader and 're-reader of all his series' I highly reccomend 'The Corps Series' to any military buff. The mixture of fiction laced with historical fact is not only educational but absolutely leaves one impatiently 'Champing at the bit' for the next offering. Does Mr. Griffth intend to continue the Marine Corps saga? I fervently hope so.

    War and learning from our past.

    As a former Marine, I found myself re-living past experiences.

    This series has earned all its high marks. This author has gone beyond the blood and guts of war and has presented the polical reasons for past wars and shows the complex relationship between civilian control and military application of that control.
