Genre: Fiction-Young Adult & Teen Fantasy, Horse Books
Summary & Review:
In this exciting unicorn fantasy, what begins as a simple, yet strong, bond between and boy and his horse becomes a enduring partnership that sustains Nick and Jazz through their thrilling journey into the Land Behind the Mist: Celestia. A kingdom beyond this world, ruled and protected by great and noble horses who have attained the vaulted status of unicorn. While at first Nick appears to be the only human in this world, he learns the truth behind a battle that is threatening to tear Celestia apart. With the guidance of the Council of the Twelve Ancients and their leader Urijah, Nick and Jazz must face off against the forces of evil to save not only the kingdom, but also a lonely, forsaken prisoner held captive in the darkness.
This is the first book of M.J. Evans' new fantasy trilogy. Behind the Mist would definitely appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure, a la C.S. Lewis' best fantasy books, The Chronicles of Narnia. On the surface, the story is a fun adventure, but deeper levels hold meaning and teach a moral tale. It would be a great book for parents to read to their children to teach them important lessons while helping them gain a love of reading. I think children's fantasy stories are an excellent way to introduce the fun of reading to children. Plus, anyone with an interest in horses or unicorns would absolutely love the horse stories found within this horse-themed fantasy.

I met author MJ Evans at a book fair. Her enthusiasm about her characters and their world was so heartfelt I had to buy the book even though I'm in my 50's. I was not disappointed. Evans' imagination has created a complete fantasy world with delightful detail and engaging characters. In the world of Celestia, her heroes, human and equine, experience adventure, honor, loyalty and friendship as they take on an evil force and meet it with love and valor. She manages to impart important lessons in living well while making it all part of the story. I have already eagerly begun Mists of Darkness, the second in the trilogy, and look forward to #3. "Come with me Jazz." said a glorious creature. "No I can't leave Nick." said Jazz. If you like horses or mythical creatures you will love Behind the Mist! A book about a boy named Nick and his horse Jazz going on a quest so Jazz can be a unicorn. Together NIck and Jazz have to go to the dark kingdom and defeat the leader of the Dark Kingdom named Hasbadana. But first they have to learn how to use their powers to help them. They meet some animals and 13 dark unicorns that help them during this perilous quest. It is a great book and teaches the reader loyalty and friendship. There is a 2nd and 3rd book to the series and I am looking forward to the next book. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. "What a great book for kids, tweens, young adults and adults! I don't even like fantasy, horses, unicorns etc., but picked up this book and cou...ldn't put it down. What an intriguing story, well written and fun to read. I can hardly wait for book 2 - I heard there are going to be 3! Yippppeeee! At first I thought it would be for girls with unicorns etc., but after I read it I knew boys would love it just as much. I gave it to my grandson and he loved it because of the conflict and suspense. It is a book you can let your kids of any age read with complete confidence in the language, story and lessons of character taught. Now that school is out and summer reading programs are starting, put Behind the Mist at the top of your list! Well done M.J. Evans!"Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
