    Great Guide--Highly Recommended

    I got this book before a week-long trip to Beijing. It was one of the best travel guides I've ever used. It was almost ridiculously easy to use, came with detailed maps, restaurant guides, tourist sites, Mandarin phrases--pretty much everything a first-time traveler could want. Other travelers on my tour laughed at me at first because when I talked about sites I wanted to see in Beijing I kept referencing "the book", but they stopped laughing quickly when I was able to navigate us effortlessly around the city thanks to the valuable information it provided! The authors did a great job making this city navigable for a first time visitor, and provide a wealth of information at a very reasonable price.

    My only critiques--I found that some of the restaurant information wasn't so helpful. Lydia's Manor, which the authors speak highly of, is no longer there. Additionally, the food at Grandma's Kitchen, of which they also spoke highly, made a dining companion and me sick. (Don't order the chicken there, whatever you do!) The list of Mandarin phrases they provide is also very helpful, but a pronunciation guide would have been great, especially since Mandarin is a very difficult language to speak given the emphasis on tone. Finally, I think a less detailed section on the hutong district and more attention to the hotels would have been helpful.

    At any rate, this book was great preparation and a wonderful travel guide for my first trip to Beijing. It is a must-use for anyone planning to visit this exciting city.
