Editorial Reviews

"All my life my father was manifest as an absence." That absence became a presence when Nick Flynn met Jonathan by chance in a homeless shelter. At first, the encounter seems less than promising: Nick's father is an impoverished ex-convict who is convinced that America has produced only three great writers; Mark Twain, J.D. Salinger, and himself. Nick Flynn's memoir touches issues of innocence lost and distances conquered. The Washington Post reviewer praised this book as "A powerful tale, stylishly told... The prose swirls in graceful arcs that frequently rise to the level of poetry, leavened by mordant humor." Now in trade paperback and NOOK Book. (P.S. This is a movie tie-in edition. The film, which was released in mid-March, stars Robert De Niro, Paul Dano, and Julianne Moore.)

Edward Ash-Milby

Washington Post
“The prose swirls in graceful arcs that frequently rise to the level of poetry, leavened by mordant humor. . . . A powerful tale, stylishly told.”
New York Times Book Review
“A potent, distinctive autobiography. . . . Flynn’s talents are considerable—he has a compelling voice and a wry sense of humor, especially about himself.”
Los Angeles Times Book Review
“Told with energy, critical reflection and sensitivity, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City is less a memoir than a study of one of America’s darker conundrums: homelessness. . . . [It suggests] Lear, Beckett, Faulkner, Genet and forc[es] us to decide which is more painful: a parent’s lost dreams or a child’s lost innocence.”

I took took this book personally/ it left me with the same sort of emotional aftertaste as would the memory that comes-back to visit, when after many years, you smell something akin to low, low tide off the Driftway or hear once again the theme from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid..... this book was and is emotional memory an unknowing co-existence in time and space.......hey Flynn, rock on, your words, sang old songs to my soul.
