Overview

Beginning with his first film score, for BLOOD SIMPLE, and right on through others including FARGO, SPANISH PRISONER, VELVET GOLDMINE, and GODS AND MONSTERS, composer Carter Burwell has established impeccable indie-alt scene credentials. Which makes him the spot-on perfect music man for director Spike Jonze's darkly entertaining debut feature film, an outrageous comedic fantasia exploration of love, identity, and celebrity. The soundtrack includes some Bartok and two mixes of "Amphibian," an exclusive song from Icelandic dance/pop queen Björk, one of which is the opener. It's a swell, weird theater intro to the reality bender that follows, "Malkovich Masterpiece Remix," with the actor himself singing. Burwell, who also tastily orchestrates, conducts, and even speaks on one piece, eases things down with "Puppet Love," a dreamy moment with orchestra behind a delicate piano sound. Burwell's score has a layered sound texture to it, as if waves of wind, silk, sleep, and things not quite known and sometimes disquieting have all found expression in his music. It's mysterious and dangerously alluring stuff that rewards repeated listenings.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The soundtrack to Spike Jonze's critically acclaimed debut film Being John Malkovich features an equally idiosyncratic, bittersweet score by composer Carter Burwell that captures the film's mix of humor, sadness, and innovation. The album also debuts two versions of Björk's "Amphibian," which continues the sparse, emotionally direct artistic path she began on Homogenic. Björk's spiraling vocals encircle the song's shuffling beat and eerie strings, harps, and whistles like smoke rings; even for someone as relentlessly innovative as she is, "Amphibian" is quite a departure. Last but not least, the soundtrack includes "Malkovich Masterpiece Remix," an extended version of John Malkovich's torchy love song to himself in one of the film's most mind-bending scenes. The Being John Malkovich soundtrack is a fitting companion piece to one of 1999's finest films.
