Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The same doors that barred African Americans from playing for the major leagues in the United States often also kept out Latin Americans, and when Jackie Robinson opened the door in 1947, Latinos benefited as well. This book profiles 14 outstanding baseball players from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic whose careers paved the way for contemporary Latino players. The earliest is the Cuban pitcher José Méndez, who played from 1908 to 1927 both in Cuba and in the United States, where his dark skin relegated him to the Negro Leagues. Fellow Cuban Dolf Luque played from 1912 to 1946, but because he was light-skinned, he could play in the majors and became the first Latino to pitch in a World Series. Each player is described in a set of facing pages that are designed as the front and back of a baseball card. Flat colors overlay old black-and-white photos of the players for a pleasingly retro effect. 2001, Lee & Low, $16.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Susan Stan
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Until recently, information about Latino baseball has been scant. Winter presents one-page biographical sketches of 14 players who played between 1900 and the 1960s, including Dolf Luque, Crist-bal Torriente, and Mart'n Dihigo. He includes a couple of fascinating facts after listing pertinent details such as years played, main teams, position, and similar stats found on the back of baseball cards. Each profile faces a colorful acrylic painting on a background that resembles an old card. While some pictures (Bobby Avila, Minnie Mi-oso) are not as clear as others, most enhance the text. Because few of these players are represented in other individual or collective biographies, this title will be a welcome addition to any baseball collection.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
