Overview

After her tumultuous summer in Lily Dale, Calla has decided to stay, hoping to unearth more about her mother's untimely death. As she starts school at Lily Dale High and begins to explore her relationships with Jacy and Blue, her visions begin to occur with greater urgency. There may be a killer on the loose, and he may be after Calla for her role in solving his first victim's disappearance. Now that Calla believes in her ability, can she learn to use it properly before it leads her into more danger?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
In this second book of the "Lily Dale" series, Calla settles into living with her eccentric, psychic grandmother. She begins her senior year at the local high school and establishes friendships and relationships with neighbors and classmates. Calla can no longer deny her own psychic abilities. She sees spirits and hears messages, some of which enable her to aid a kidnapped teenage girl in another state. The ensuing publicity puts Calla's life in danger as the murderer uses the information to find her in Lily Dale. Necessary information from the previous book is included unobtrusively. The mystery concerning her mother's death is further explored, but not solved. (Did her mother accidentally fall down the stairs or was she pushed?) This is a gripping, suspenseful story filled with numerous aspects of supernatural phenomena. Readers of the first two books will be anxiously awaiting the third. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
VOYA - Kim Carter
This sequel picks up within days of when Lily Dale: Awakening (Walker, 2007/VOYA December 2007) ends, with Calla Delaney settling in with her grandmother Odelia, a medium in Lily Dale, New York, a town of spiritualists. The problem is that life is anything but ordinary. Calla grapples with how to handle the startling ghostly visits of the young woman whose body Calla helped locate. The woman's murderer is still on the loose-and active. Calla must simultaneously prepare to start her senior year at the nearby high school while wondering about snippets of memory that lead her to believe her own mother was murdered and juggling the interest of two Lily Dale boys and renewed e-mails from her ex-boyfriend. Add the impending visit of Calla's father, who knows nothing of the special nature of Lily Dale or Odelia's calling, and Calla's visions of another young woman, alive but left to die, and it is no wonder Calla has no warning that the killer is closing in on her. With the exception of stilted, stereotyped, second-person point-of-view depictions of the serial killer, this novel will appeal to readers looking for fast-paced pleasure reading, with multiple plot threads that incorporate suspense, romance, the supernatural, and friendships. VOYA - Lyna Dufresene
I like this book a lot, mostly because it makes me want to keep reading, keep wondering, keep guessing, and I can't wait until I read the next book, which hasn't come out yet. I think people who believe in ghosts and a lot of Christians will find this book very interesting. Reviewer: Lyna Dufresene, Teen Reviewer

Gr 8-10

An exciting, stand-alone sequel to Lily Dale: Awakening (Walker, 2007). Calla Delaney, 17, has moved from Tampa, FL, to Lily Dale, a small town in western New York, to live with her grandmother, a registered medium. Calla finds that she, too, has the gift of seeing and hearing spirits. Indeed, a spirit visited her at her mother's funeral a few months earlier and alerted her to the fact that the death was not accidental. Calla must find out more about her mother's past, which includes a spurned boyfriend from Lily Dale High School. Now, a serial killer is attacking blond teenage girls. Through her visions, Calla knows the location of the body of the first one murdered. She also sees where the latest victim has been dumped, while still alive. Little does she realize that her name is next on the list. Even while these terrible incidents are happening, Calla must adjust to her surroundings, make friends, and begin a new school as a senior. She confides in Jacy, and he reaches out to help her handle her fears and suspicions. Her former boyfriend seems interested in renewing their relationship. And then there is the hot guy Blue, who makes Calla's head spin. This installment leaves unanswered questions that beg for resolution in yet another "Lily Dale" novel.-Lillian Hecker, Town of Pelham Public Library, NY

Kirkus Reviews
Seventeen-year-old Calla continues to cope with the loss of her mother and with her own burgeoning clairvoyant powers in this fast-paced second series entry (Awakening, 2007). The opening scene chills readers when a nameless girl is lured into the car of a psychopath. Staub then turns to an occasionally awkward present-tense narration of Calla's life in Lily Dale, N.Y., over a period of 13 days. Problems in school and Calla's attraction to two very different boys alternate with doubts about her mother's death and repeated visions of a murder victim whose body Calla was instrumental in locating. Characterization is brisk and the background action is predictable. However, scenes that reveal the serial killer's thoughts and actions ratchet up the suspense, and the fate of the girl abducted at the start is guaranteed to garner interest. Although the killer is stopped in the final pages, readers will have to wait for the next installment to find out what really happened to Calla's mom-as well as which of the boys she'll wind up dating. Facile but compelling. (Fiction. YA)
