Overview

ASV's Beloved Clara: A True Story of Love, Passion & Tragedy is the CD issue of a program given by pianist Lucy Parham since 2002, when she presented it for the first time at Wigmore Hall; since then it has been given in concert several times and broadcast repeatedly on BBC Radio. Of the participating actors here, Martin Jarvis' voice will be familiar to anyone who has taken a fancy to collecting audio books. Joanna David appears frequently on the BBC and has been seen in the United States on several different imported programs carried as part of PBS' Masterpiece Theater umbrella series, including as a regular character on Rumpole of the Bailey. This largely spoken program excerpts numerous diary entries and letters left by composers Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Johannes Brahms and contrasts their love triangle with musical selections, played by Parham, which fits the mood of the tale told as it progresses. The readings are expert, and the overall quality of Beloved Clara: A True Story of Love, Passion & Tragedy is highly professional in its concept and execution. On the other hand, if one is not strongly inclined toward the sentimental and has little to no interest in a soap-operatic treatment of the private lives of these profoundly miserable historic characters, then Beloved Clara: A True Story of Love, Passion and Tragedy will be like Kryptonite. Every word is delivered in a highly exaggerated emotionalism that one readily associates with the aura of Shakespearean theater, and the musical excerpts are so short they are clearly meant to illustrate the texts, rather than provide enjoyment in themselves. Yet admittedly, so strong a criticism is like taking exception to an apple because it is not an orange -- Beloved Clara: A True Story of Love, Passion & Tragedy is just like an audio book, except that it doesn't have a regular "book" to support it. Certainly, it would work well as a radio broadcast and even in the concert milieu for which it was created as a kind of low-key theater -- is releasing it as a regular classical music CD quite the right outlet for it? For a long day's drive when one wants not to do battle with keeping a radio station in tune, then Beloved Clara: A True Story of Love, Passion and Tragedy might well provide an hour's satisfying entertainment for someone inclined toward this type of "true love story." Others seeking a more musical program will want to consider this choice very, very carefully.
