Overview

Belushi: A Biography is an epic oral history of beloved actor John Belushi, featuring over a hundred new interviews with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Robin Williams, Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase, Christopher Guest, and many, many more. It follows John from his early days bussing tables at his father's blue collar Chicago diner, to his apprenticeship with Del Close at Second City, to his watershed work at the National Lampoon, and on to the heights of fame in Saturday Night Live, Animal House and Blues Brothers—all ultimately lost to the tragic downfall he could not escape.

More than just a portrait of a man, this book also offers an intimate look at the birth of the SNL generation, a group of unknown actors, writers and comedians who came together in the downtown comedy scene of New York City and, through one late-night television show and a handful of movies, changed the entertainment industry as we know it today. John's role as the ringleader and trailblazer in that revolution is now fully explored for the first time.

Meet the Author

JUDITH BELUSHI PISANO has enjoyed an eclectic career as a writer, producer, and graphic artist, starting as an art assistant at the National Lampoon, later transferring to work as a production assistant on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Upon departing from the world of radio, Judy made her first publishing foray, teaming up with National Lampoon writer Anne Beatts and writer Deanne Stillman to create several trade paperbacks, including Titters: The First Collection of Humor by Women, Titters 101, and The Mom Book. In 1978, Judy and John Belushi partnered with Dan Aykroyd to open the Phantom/Black Rhino office in NYC from which they worked. As Vice President and Creative Director of Phantom, Judy designed the Animal House book and a wide array of Blues Brothers merchandise, including the four iconic Blues Brothers record album jackets. She also wrote and designed Blues Brothers: Private, a compendium of Blues Brothers miscellany published as a tie-in with the 1980 hit film.

After John Belushi’s death in 1982, Judy produced and wrote West Heaven, a music-video tribute to her late husband, which aired on Saturday Night Live. In 1984 she produced The Best of John Belushi, for Warner Communications. In 1987, she published Samurai Widow, a memoir of her life together with John.
Today, she lives on Martha’s Vineyard with her three daughters, a son, and her dog, Bones.

TANNER COLBY is the coauthor of Belushi: a Biography and the New York Times and L.A. Times bestseller The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts. He has recently finished his third book, Some of My Best Friends Are Black: The Strange Story of Integration in America, a probing and humorous look at racial integration in modern day America, to be published in July 2012. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Danielle, and their dog, Spanky.
