Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
Heroes and heroines save the Earth from alien nano-chips, primarily through physical battles using futuristic weapons that become conveniently available whenever needed. The emphasis is on action, mostly fighting. There is almost no description or character development. Although the text uses short, simple sentence structures with limited vocabulary appropriate to its intended audience of early to mid-level elementary school readers, the characters are much older teenagers who can drive and use weapons. There are hints of romantic interests and a theme that involves some understanding of nano-chip technology. With such themes, the book may have more appeal for reluctant teenage readers than tweens. Part of a series of adventures based on the "Ben 10" Cartoon Network animated series, ten-year-old Ben from the original feature is now sixteen years old here. Those who have not read earlier series books or watched the cartoons will not be familiar with some of the central themes including references to "the Plumbers" and the capabilities of the "Omnitrix." The authors offer very little explanation for the uninitiated. This volume includes a small, primarily black-and-white foldout poster to advertise the Cartoon Network series. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
