Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It is the ultimate Cinderella story. Poor kid makes it rich. It is what is in the middle of poor and rich that makes Ben Affleck a very interesting individual. No matter how many times he and childhood friend Matt Damon were turned down, they continued their fight for their dream of acting and becoming stars. Affleck carried some eighteen different acting roles since the beginning in 1984. From Affleck's humble beginnings to his current walk of fame, this book shares it all. This book is part of the "Scenes" series. 1999, Aladdin Paperbacks, Ages 12 up, $6.99. Reviewer: Scott S. Floyd

From Chapter One

It's all about connections, right? As the old Tinsel Town saying goes, "You're nothing till you know somebody."

Try telling that to Ben Affleck.

In the winter of 1997 Ben and his buddy Matt Damon came along to show the cynics out there that there's still something to be said for hard work and a dream. There's a lot to be said, actually. It's tough to decide which is a more heartwarming, entertaining story, the one Ben and Matt created for the Oscar-winning film Good Will Hunting or the one they lived right up until the movie was released. Both stories have the rags-to-riches, the undying friendship, the big climax, the love story, the strong moral, and the happy ending. Of course, one of these stories, fortunately, hasn't really ended. In fact, as far as Ben's concerned, it's only just begun.

A lot has happened in the year since Good Will Hunting became a hit. Ben has an Oscar in his pocket, a megabudget blockbuster movie behind him, and multimillion-dollar roles of his choosing ahead of him. Right now, Ben Affleck is having a pretty good time being Ben Affleck.

And why wouldn't he?

Despite popular belief, it's been a long time coming for Ben. But now that he's learned to play the Hollywood game, it seems he's always a step ahead, never taking himself or the game too seriously and always able to keep it all in perspective. Ben would probably be the first to tell you that this is not such an easy thing to do, especially when you've got thousands of adoring fans inflating your ego every step of the way. Fortunately, family and friends have always been there to keep him sane and plenty humble.

It's a strong cast of supporters: Matt Damon, fellow rising star, always knowing exactly what Ben's going through. Casey Affleck, little brother and fellow actor, always there to talk about family matters and, as is the duty of all little brothers, to keep that ego in check. (How many others had the pleasure of witnessing every awkward stage?) Finally there's Ben's mother, Chris, there to offer unconditional love, home-cooked meals, and all the wisdom Ben ever needed to transform so gracefully into one of Hollywood's smartest young success stories. She might also be the last person on earth who can still order Big Ben around.

But becoming a Hollywood player takes more than good looks and supporting friends. It takes talent, focus, and the undying will to succeed -- all qualities Ben Affleck has learned to perfect.
