Children's Literature
Kids have a strong desire to be accepted, so they should relate to this story of a bird named Little Ben who tries to join a swashbuckling band of sparrows called the Buccaneers. Little Ben is told he must wait until he is older and bigger. Nonetheless, Ben follows the Buccaneers as they swoop down on a café to garner all the cake crumbs, and he watches as they tease the cat and then swoop away, out of his reach. Ben thinks there must be some way to prove to the Buccaneers that he is courageous enough to join in the fun. The cat slyly offers to help Little Ben, and then tricks him into leading all the Buccaneers into a trap. Ben devises a clever way to rescue all the sparrows and the captain decides to let him join the group. Soon, they are swooping down in formation on the café, with Little Ben right in the middle. The soft, feathery illustrations are fitting for this story of the little sparrow and the adventurous band of birds. 2001, North-South Books, $15.95 and $15.88. Ages 4 to 8. Gr 1-2-A story with the universal theme of wanting to belong to the in crowd. Ben is a young sparrow whose only desire is to join the Buccaneers, a quick-flying, adventurous squadron of birds. After he is told he is too young to take part in their antics, he sets out to prove his worthiness. In cahoots with a crafty cat that has other plans for the bird bunch, Ben creates a plan to impress the Buccaneers. He escapes from the feline's claws, but the rest of the crew is trapped for her dinner. He carries out a daring rescue, and, ultimately and a little surprisingly, the Buccaneers accept him, even though he had risked their lives in the first place. The story will ring true with many young children. However, while Gukova's pastel illustrations are hazy and beautiful, and create an interesting backdrop for the story, they do not convey action and adventure. There is little movement in them, and in scenes where all of the Buccaneers are present, it is difficult to distinguish Ben from the other sparrows. The cat, however, is well served by the soft artwork, which casts her as a shadowy villain.
