Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Born to wealth and privilege, Benazir Bhutto could have led an easy, cloistered life in Pakistan. Instead, her visionary father ensured that she and her sisters got an education, and encouraged them to reach their potential. Her family's wealth eventually led her father into politics. In the year Benazir graduated from Radcliffe, her father became Prime Minister of Pakistan. Oxford University eventually followed for Benazir, but unfortunately so did political turmoil in her home country. When her father was ousted in a coup d'etat, Benazir returned to Pakistan and became the spokesperson for the family's vast business holdings. Following her father's execution in 1977 and her six month house arrest, Benazir left Pakistan and began speaking the world over about democracy and her country. It was not long before she stepped into the political fray, eventually winning election as the country's Prime Minister at the age of 35. Reforms followed, as did the inevitable threats to her life. Alternately exiled and in power, Benazir never gave up on the country of her birth and was in fact assassinated in 2007 as she attempted yet again to lead her country out of turmoil. Part of the six-title "Leading Women" series, this book provides an even-handed look at the trials and tribulations of this accomplished woman. Side bars throughout help explain background issues central to understanding the issues at hand, a timeline aids in summarizing key moments, source notes detail the author's resources, and a bibliography provides middle and high school readers with additional information in which to find out more. A highly recommend resource. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
