Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
An aging professor lectures to a college class and is distracted by the low necklines of the girls sitting before him. His distractions lead him to remember his past, all of which he weaves into his lecture. "That's the life of the mind," according to Bene-Dictions. It's also the ironic stance taken by Rankin (winner of the 2002 Vassar Miller Prize in Poetry) in these long poems. Mixing references to artists like Matisse, Van Gogh, and Michelangelo; a smattering of thoughts from Henry James, Sigmund Freud, St. Augustine, and others; allusions to T.S. Eliot; and descriptions of sex, these poems seem more like an academic exercise than emotion recollected in tranquillity. They contain the glowing "inner light" of a Matisse painting; the irony and paradox of Wallace Stevens; and the intellectual ramblings of Eliot. One could say the collection is a contemporary retelling of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," but that would be too dismissive of the originality of these funny-sad poems that come at you from several directions at once. Recommended for public and academic libraries.-Diane Scharper, Towson Univ., MD Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
