i have read this book many times and love it. draws you in and makes you laugh and cry along with daria . very easy to get interested in.

How Can This Possibly Turn Out Well?

Daria Camfield watches her husband walk away, never to return to their small hut in the jungles of Columbia. The young widow returns to the States heart-broken but holding the secret she never had a chance to share with Nathan-she carries their baby.

Daria struggles to make a way for herself and her newborn daughter. When Dr. Colson Hunter enters her life, she wonders at the fact that God would allow her a second chance at love and family. But when word arrives that Nathan is alive, Daria is caught between her two husbands and realizes she loves them both. Finally she turns to the God she has kept shut out of her life for far too long.

Wonderfully written, believable, genuine characters come to life on the page with all their faults and glories. Raney shows just how easily we can justify the choices we make. She also shows the dangers of setting our own path rather than relying on God and waiting on His timing.

The book explores relationship issues between husband and wife, parent and child, and adult parents and their children, giving biblical views of each. Beneath a Southern Sky takes an honest look at the struggles of new marriage, the deep riches of committed relationships, and the reality of sacrificial love.

A wonderful, gripping story of sacrifice and second chances, it made my mind raced ahead to discover how Raney could possibly resolve this in a satisfying, biblical, and believable way. A believable ending is made even more powerful and satisfying by a touching epilogue.

Recommended for women of any age.

A great read!

I found this book very easy to get into. Within the first page, I was drawn to follow Daria, and what choices she made, and where her choices took her in life. I definatly recommend this book! Very difficult to put down, make sure there is time to finish once you start!

Great Read

Beneath A Southern Sky is a story about Daria, a missionary in South Africa whose husband is reportedly killed in a remote village. Daria returns home to the U.S. to mourn his death and prepare for the birth of their daughter. As she tries move forward with her life she meets Colson Hunter. He falls in love with her and asks her to marry him. Daria feels that God is calling her to return to South Africa but she ignores His voice and marries Colson. Not long after their wedding she receives a telegram that turns her life upside down. You'll have to read the story to find out what the telegram says, and what Daria's response is.
I really enjoyed this book. Deborah Raney's descriptions of the rain forest were remarkable. I felt as if I were there. Later in the book I could really feel what Daria was going through - trying to decide whether or not to marry Colson, and how hard it was to make her decisions. The message Deborah conveys about how important it is to wait on the Lord and not ignore the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit is one we all need to know.

Interesting Book for the Baby Boomer Generation and Sandwich Generation

BENEATH A SOUTHERN SKY by Deborah Raney is an intriguing contemporary novel that will remind many of us in the Baby Boomer Generation of the Doris Day movie, Move Over, Darling. Daria Camfield is a missionary working with her husband, Nate, in South America. She is grief stricken when she is informed of the death of Nate. He had left her behind to provide medical help to people in a native village further away from their mission home base. Once she heard the news, she decided to go back to the states in order to have help from her family with the baby she was expecting. As in Doris Day's movie, time passed, she met another Christian man of high integrity who grew to love her and her daughter, and they were married.
Three years after her husband's death she and her family are shocked and devastated to learn he had not died after all. Unlike Move Over Darling, this book is not a comedy. Instead it's an interesting Christian novel with substance that realistically portrays mission life along with all the ramifications of this particularly difficult situation. I really enjoyed reading it, especially since it had a solid ending that was very satisfying. Great book for this Sandwich Generation senior home care giver to read while waiting at doctor's offices.

Beneath a Southern Sky by Deborah Raney

Daria is very much in love with her husband, Nate. They are both Christian missionaries in South America when he disappears and is assumed dead. She heads back to the United States certain she is carrying Nate's child. After giving birth, she gets a job in a veterinarian's office and falls in love with her new boss. A little voice in the back of her mind tells her to wait but ignoring it she accepts his proposal and gets married. Unknown to Daria, Nate didn't die. He was very sick and held prisoner in South America. He's never stopped loving Daria. Daria's world starts to fall apart when Nate returns.

Beneath a Southern Sky is a Christian romance that I really enjoyed. The characters are very believable and unlike some Christian novels, they aren't perfect. They have faults and those faults make them all the more lovable and endearing. The story is very well written and I could easily feel all the emotions Daria experienced mourning her first husband and the torment she felt when her first husband came "back from the dead". It wasn't an obvious choice between the two men and I had a really hard time figuring out what her choice would be.

This is a really good book that will appeal to lovers of romance and Christian books. It's not an overly preachy book or one where everyone is spouting salvation stories every other page. I think this would appeal to people who don't regularly read Christian stories as well as those that do.

A Journey of Love

Imagine hearing that the love of your life has been killed....then years later that he is alive!!!!!!! This dilemma takes the reader through all the emotions possible, and then some. The background in underdeveloped Colombia is awesome, but the story grabs your heart and just won't let go. This is a MUST READ for any Christian romance/adventure reader. Months later, my heart is still torn by this book, I think you will love it as much as I do. I'm looking forward to the sequel!!!!

OUT OF THE ORDINARY STORYTELLING

I was pulled in by this powerful theme and the author's adept handling of a tragic circumstance, both with emotional sensitivity and according to biblical, spiritual principles. The epilogue really rounds off the satisfying conclusion. Provides probing take-away for readers. It certainly impacted my own thinking.

Absolutely Wonderful!!!!

This is a definite must read!!! Once you get started you can't put it down (I read it in two days). I love this lady's writing style. It's perfect if you like surprise endings, and I am definitly going to read the sequel.

Is it just Me?

I really enjoyed this book untill the problem in the book presented itself. I did not think that it was really saying God helps us through... it was more God punishes us through... But looking at the other ratings you should probably go along with it and see. I just was kinda dissapointed.

Captivating love story

An excellent and poignant story! I read this on my summer vacation and didn't want to do anything else until I had finished Beneath a Southern Sky. I kept raving about it to my friends who then fought over being the next one to get this enthralling book. It is a must read IF you want a realistic portrayal of what happens when very good Christians fail to seek the counsel of God. Get ready to laugh, to learn and to cry. Part of that new life includes the handsome & personalble Dr. Colson Hunter. When Cole asks for Daria's hand in marriage, she quickly says yes. The early days of Daria's marriage to Cole sees both good and bad days and is eventually blessed with the forthcoming arrival of another child. Life finally seems to be settling down to a happy medium when the unthinkable happens: Dr. nathan Camfield has been found...alive! Personal Comments: Few books rivet me; this is one of those. Ms. Raney so carefully created her characters and researched her subject matter. I woke up early--to read. I carried the book with me--to read. It shared teatime with me and I took it to bed for 'just a few more pages' before falling asleep. Deb Raney writes another winner

This is a wonderful story that reminds the reader that God's timing is perfect and that we need to trust His plan for our lives. As always, Ms. Raney creates realistic, likeable characters, that are not 'cardboard', but that have depth and flaws. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good Christian fiction.

Soul searching excellence

Deb Raney knows how to weave a tale of exquisite depth, with a wrench at the end that leaves the reader satisfied and thoughtful. The struggles of Daria, a young, widowed mother, became my own as I watched her grieve the death of her husband, and then fall in love again. When she finds herself in a horrible dilemma with no escape, we see the power of true love at its most beautiful. This gives us a picture of the sacrificial love of Christ. Another Deb Raney masterpiece.
