Beneath the Bridge

Overview

A tiny boat's giant journey.

When a young boy launches a tiny paper boat downstream, he wonders about the adventures it will have on its voyage. The little vessel sails past goggling frogs and hovering insects, houses and stores along the shores, roads and railways, and eventually into the shadows of giant ships.

Though the big river becomes a dangerous place for the small boat, there are enough helpers on the water to keep the vessel afloat ...

Though the big river becomes a dangerous place for the small boat, there are enough helpers on the water to keep the vessel afloat and on its way. The paper ship is safely passed from canoe to riverboat and finally to the crew of an ocean liner.

"Someday I'll follow, just to see," thinks the boy, "but for now it sails for me." Beneath the Bridge is a rhythmic and moving tale told in verse that gently runs through detailed and dynamic illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this beautifully illustrated book, a little boy launches a paper boat in a stream. From there it travels to the sea after passing many things. The boy does not mind his boat getting away since it can have all sorts of adventures for him. Written in rhyme, this book is great for story time or bedtime. It is a pleasure to read aloud. The words flow, and the rhythm bounces along. Each page builds on the preceding. By the end everything the boat has seen repeats in the text. The repetition occurs consistently enough that children will want to join in the chant. The illustrations add to the text. Besides the items specifically mentioned, the boat also passes additional people and objects. The people are a mix of races and ages consistent with the modern North American city shown. The people are involved in a wide variety of activities, most of which are not cataloged in the text. Many additional animals also appear in the pictures. The pictures provide a jumping off point for dialogue between the reader and the child, since the two can discuss the added details. 2004, Annick Press, Ages 2 to 5.

Interviews & Essays

Two young children lying on their tummies on a small boardwalk and looking into the water below reminded me of all the times I'd looked down into water as a child. It led me in memory through all the larger and larger bridges I'd experienced over the years...from the creeks and coulees of my prairie childhood to the great rivers I later encountered, rivers that that fed directly into the wonder of the ocean itself and yet still linked with that first small creek.

Once the idea for "Bridges" began to take shape, the words began to flow lyrically, joyously across the page. Great joy and great sadness ... but it is joy that lifts us and carries us sweetly along.

It is joy that fills the book and it is Ruth Ohi's wonderful art that brings out all the richness along the way.

(P.S. I also had a wonderful time finding pictures of all kinds of amazing bridges to help Ruth have a large and marvelous selection to choose from as she worked on the illustrations.)
