Beneath The Crossby Jady S Copeland (Editor)
The Bible has much to say about the Lord's Supper. Almost every component of this memorial is rich with meaning-meaning supplied by Old Testament foreshadowing and New Testament teaching. The Lord's death itself is meaningful and significant in ways we rarely point out. Beneath the Cross explores the depths of symbolism and meaning to be found in the last hours of the Lord's life and offers a helpful look at the memorial feast that commemorates it.

One of the greatest challenges for me is focusing during the Lord's Supper. I realize we are gathered to remember the greatest story that has ever been told¿the story of grace offered through Christ's death. But I have three kids who are often too active. In a few short moments following the Supper I am going to be delivering a sermon that I hope is powerful and convincing to the listeners. There are other distractions as well: the kids chatting behind, the screaming baby on the other side of the auditorium, etc.
If your spiritual family is like mine, you try to remedy that in a variety of ways. You sing a song to "prepare your minds for the Lord's Supper." Often one will read scripture and make comments to help us understand our purpose. The prayers for the bread and cup will often serve as a reminder. I have often read the scriptures to help me focus on the Memorial Feast. All of that is good. But when the plates are passed the distractions increase. It's apparent Satan attends the assemblies!
Recently I found a great tool to help combat this problem. Beneath the Cross: Essays and Reflections on the Lord's Supper is a tremendous tool for improving your communion with the Lord. This collection includes sixty-nine essays and articles that apply to the Lord's Supper. The book can easily be carried into the assembly and used during your reflection of the cross during this important time.
I've enjoyed using Beneath the Cross personally for this reason. I mark the date I've read each entry in the margins of the page. I can often read one or two entries depending on the size each Sunday. I have benefited greatly from this great tool. I recommend this book highly.
The Lord¿s Supper has been grossly underserved in terms of literature and emphasis within church services. This is sad given the meaning of the Lord¿s Supper. Not only is it the memorial of Jesus Sacrifice, but traces of its meaning can be found throughout the entire Bible. Beneath the Cross has put some emphasis back where it belongs. The book is a compilation of essays giving more meaning to and providing greater understanding for the Lord¿s Supper. The book is divided into four sections. The first part of the book deals with the general nature and background of the Lord¿s Supper. The second section (my personal favorite) looks at various passages from the Old and New Testament and discusses their relationship with the sacrifice on cross; the theme being that Jesus¿ sacrifice was God¿s plan from the beginning and is traceable through the entire Bible. The third sections deals with the individual and the cross ¿ how does it affect me? And the final section looks at a number of hymns which are typically associated with the taking of the Lord¿s Supper.
Over 40 authors from across the country have contributed to this book. Some of which are considered ¿scholars¿ in the area of Biblical studies, while others have devoted themselves to a better understanding of the Bible. Do not make the mistake of thinking that this is some little ¿devotional.¿ Some of the essays in this book will challenge you academically and some will challenge you emotionally.
