Benjamin feels big when he wears his dad's old shoes. He can make big tracks in the snow, bound through puddles, and kick up plumes of dust. Benjamin plans on wearing his big shoes when he starts kindergarten. Through sensitive strategizing by his mother and his future teacher, Benjamin decides on his own that big shoes will get in the way of his fun. The illustrations are at their best when we see the boy exulting in the power of the shoes. Though a few of the pen and watercolor drawings are amateurish, overall this sympathetic treatment of a youngster's newfound independence is worthwhile.
