Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Benjamin Franklin's life story told in 250 words or less leaves something to be desired. Perhaps dividing the story into two short books would have given the author the leeway to show the reader why this is a man worth knowing about. Although the publisher describes itself as "offering an exciting range of titles to encourage even the most reluctant reader to pick up a book-and read" this beautifully illustrated book doesn't seem to fit the description. It is factual, it is clear, and it is boring. The author, surely hampered by restrictions on vocabulary and length, did well telling the facts of his life, but obviously had no room to humanize the story. Why did he attend school for just two years? How did he learn to love to read and write in that short time? He "learned" about electricity, the book says. Unless the teacher points it out, children aren't likely to realize he actually discovered the connection. Each page features a helpful timeline. The book includes table of contents, glossary, references to other books and Internet sites and an index. The historical content of this book and its accessible vocabulary make this book appropriate to use with students of English as a second language, as well as with young children. 2002, Pebble Books/Capstone Press, $14.60.
