Overview

Beowulf is the earliest extant poem in a modern European language. It was composed in England four centuries before the Norman Conquest. As a social document this great epic poem is invaluable -- reflecting a feudal, newly Christian world of heroes and monsters, blood and victory, life and death. As a work of art it is quite unique; Beowulf rings with a beauty, power, and artistry that have kept it alive for more than twelve centuries. The noble simplicity of Beowulf's anonymous Anglo-Saxon singer is recaptured in this vivid translation by Burton Raffel.

Meet the Author

Anonymous. Yeah, there's not much we can tell you about the author as nobody knows anything beyond a wide estimate that Beowulf was written between the 8th and 11th centuries CE. We think you'll enjoy the tale even without knowing anything about the author. Oh, who are we kidding? Odds are, you're reading this only because it was assigned in class, but hey, it has a cool cover.

. Book Review Beowulf is a great read and translation from the original poem in the Nowell Codex. I recommend this book to any person interested in history around the time of this poem's creation. This book is a great example of how to represent the 8th to early 11th century time period in Scandinavia. Events in the book have been verified directly from many other historic accounts from the time. Beowulf as a man is a great role model of bravery perseverance, and loyalty I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read. This Novel does a phenomenal job or intertwining fiction and reality for an overall interesting book. It gives insight to the time period and the setting and tells a story and also consists of moral values. Do not hesitate to pick this book up because there’s a movie. You will enjoy this book and it will fill your mind with personal images unable to be recreated onto a large screen.

It is hard to believe that a 1,000 year old book (poem) could still be so easliy understood and enjoyed. Hero, dragons, riches, and nobel deeds all come together with Raffels transalation of Beowulf. I have tried to read Beowolf (by other translators )a couple of times but was not able to get through it due to cryptic transalation. This translation was easy to understand and truly enjoy!!!
