    Best Coloring Book Ever

I've always loved the epic poem of "Beowulf" an its many translations and variations, but when I spotted a coloring book based on the Geat hero while shopping for a few gift books in the Kid's section, I was skeptical. It wasn't based on the recent movie and the story, while one of action and fantasy, isn't exactly "kid friendly."

Imagine my pleasant surprise to open the book and see a black and white drawing of Beowulf (looking a little like Prince Valiant of the Sunday funny pages), holding the severed arm of the monster Grendel above his head. It's a huge moment in the story when Beowulf proves his might against the monster attacking Hrothgar's kingdom, and to see it represented in a coloring book definitely brought a smile to my face. In my mind I could hear a mother telling her son, "No, Jimmy, make sure you keep the red within the lines of Grendel's bloody appendage."

I give the author and publisher's all the credit in the world for staying true to the epic legend of Beowulf, even the gory parts. A kid might like coloring the book if he/she is into fantasy and well-read enough to understand the story, but more importanlty, for the purveyor's of the odd, this is definitely something to have on your coffee table. "Here, Bob, let me show you the greatest coloring book ever made."
