Meet the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together -- both write the stories, and both write the pictures.  They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.

When I was little my mom and my sister use to read this book to me. Now that my sister has a little one, I want them to enjoy this book as I did when I was little. (I still do)

This is one of my favorite books to read to my own children when they were young. This was a gift for my grandson and I'm hoping to start a new tradition with him. A fun read-aloud book!

This is the favorite story of my children and the children that I cared for in my home daycare. Now, my kids read it to their kids and I want to get it on my Nook Color to read to them when they are at my house!

The iPad app for Nook gives tiny pictures and too much white space and you need to read it in portrait to get words and pics on the same page. Clearly you haven't worked out this format yet. Very very disappointed.

My children loved this book when they were younger and on the Nook it is even more spectacular.

I am 35 and loved this book as a kid. My three-year-old daughter absolutely loves this book. We were so glad it was still in print.

The little Bears wanted to go into the spooky old tree. The girl used the rope to grab all of them up. Inside the tree were alligators. They had wanted to see what it was like in the tree, and all went home in the end. I like spooky stories.

This is probably one of the BEST stories for the REALLY young ones. I remember reading it with my mom when I was 4/5, over & over & over until I knew each phrase by heart, before I even knew what the words meant, saying 'LESLEY DARE!' instead of 'Yes, they dare!' Now that i have my own little one, I realize some of the semantics of why I may have liked it so much, and why she now does: Very big pictures to describe to the little one, very graphic, I let her point out where the bats & monsters are...

*This review is on the book only, not the Nook version.* My daughter was 5 when I started reading this to her, and it is such an easy book that she learned how to read it on her own soon after. This is the first book she learned to read alone. I would say if your child is learning to read and in their first year of school (grade K), then this one is perfect for them. ****CHILDREN TAKING AR TESTS IN SCHOOL: This book is available in the program for your child to take an AR test on.
