Berio: Sequenzas

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
Take a musical instrument. Ask what it can do, what it wants to do, what it will do in spite of tradition. Luciano Berio has done this 13 times as of 1999, and the result is his groundbreaking series of SEQUENZAS, recorded here for the first time as a complete set. Berio has covered most of the standard orchestral instruments, beginning with the flute in 1958 and continuing on to add works for guitar, accordion, and saxophone the latter an arrangement of "Sequenza IX" for clarinet. Every musical instrument has accrued a history of performance practice and technique over the centuries, which Berio takes as a starting point to be transcended. Highlights among the early ...

Highlights among the early works are "Sequenza II" for harp, which transforms impressionistic daintiness into aggressive force, and "Sequenza V" for trombone, in which the musician sings into his instrument and assumes a clownish theatricality to disconcerting ends. From more recent years come three works recorded here by their dedicatees: "Sequenza XI" for guitar for Eliot Fisk evokes echoes of flamenco; "Sequenza XII" for bassoon Patrick Gallois requires special breathing techniques to create the illusion of a seamless, 20-minute-long maze of glissandos; and "Sequenza XIII" for accordion Teodoro Anzellotti alludes to the instrument's popular heritage. It's not all easy listening -- "Sequenza VI" for viola, the aural equivalent of a blinding strobe light, may be the most challenging -- but there's an abundance of beauty here, above all in the lyrical "Sequenza IX" for clarinet. The performances, mostly by members of the Ensemble InterContemperain, are nothing short of breathtaking, redefining virtuosity far beyond pure technical display. Here's hoping that Berio goes on to make this "complete" collection obsolete; after all, we don't yet have a "Sequenza" for french horn, organ, cello, marimba, tuba....
