Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Edited by respected historian McNeill and a number of other scholars from the United States and abroad, this holistic approach to world history is aimed at high school through college level readers. Patterned after Berkshire's Encyclopedia of Modern Asia and Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (Routledge), the work claims to be the first truly encyclopedic resource for world history, featuring 538 alphabetically arranged signed articles (e.g. alchemy, hong merchants, and women's emancipation movements). Its editors differ from other encyclopedists in taking a "dynamic world history perspective, showing synthesis, connections, and interactions through trade, warfare, migration, religion, and diplomacy through time and place." There is no Western bias; there are numerous articles on African and Asian kingdoms and biographies of world figures from ancient through modern times. Sidebars, maps, black-and-white photos, and extracts from documents and books are judiciously distributed throughout the text. However, some editorial decisions are questionable. One wonders, for example, why all of the 80 biographies are about one and a half pages in length regardless of their subject's importance? Should Aristotle, Jesus Christ, Lydia Child, and Sui Uangdi, along with numerous other Chinese emperors, receive equal attention? Bottom Line Although flawed, this specialized encyclopedia offers a fresh approach to answering the question: How did the world get to be the way it is? It is recommended for public, high school, and university library reference collections.-Stanley P. Hodge, formerly with Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, IN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
