Editorial Reviews

Andy Velez
If this diminutive spellbinder had lived in another age, she might have been tried for witchcraft. Bernadette Peters casts an absolutely irresistible spell from the moment she takes the stage in her 1998 London solo concert, vamping Stephen Sondheim's "Broadway Baby." Her reprise of "Unexpected Song" from her Tony Award-winning performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Song and Dance," the way she tears into Jerry Herman's "Time Heals Everything" with an Edith Piaf-like intensity, and her hilariously sexy rendition of a tune Madonna sang in Dick Tracy show off Peters as a performer at the very top of her game. She delivers a dozen or more Sondheim numbers before the night is over, turning each of them into a polished gem. And with the honesty and power of her sweet voice, Peters burns her way into the heart of every one of the complex songs she performs. The video and DVD releases also include special material not shown in the original PBS broadcast. All of it brings to mind the words of that sage philosopher Mae West: "Too much of a good thing can be... wonderful."
