Editorial Reviews

Susan Schmidt
Bernard the elephant bounces on his bed while his mon, dad, and grandma each put themselves to sleep trying to get him to nap. He takes special care of each of them before finally settling down to sleep. The text is well written, and the illustrations convey a soft, cozy world of soothing color.
The Horn Book Guide
Children's Literature - Rebecca Joseph
In this delightful picture book, it is time for young elephant Bernard to take his nap. Even after his mother tucks him into bed and Grandma covers him with his blanket, Bernard just isn't sleepy. So his mother sings him a song, and his father tells him a story. Everyone falls asleep except for Bernard. How Bernard finally falls asleep is entertaining and sweet.
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
Sometimes it is hard for young children to go to sleep. For Bernard, an elephant child, the entire family is involved in getting him to sleep. They all manage naps...except, of course, Bernard! A useful book for those kids who may be plagued with concerns when it is time to sleep.
School Library Journal
PreS-When a baby elephant refuses to take his nap, family members each take a turn trying to lull him to sleep. Mama sings Bernard the "Elephant's Lullaby," Papa reads him a sleepy story, and Grandma sits by him with her knitting needles peacefully clacking. However, all they succeed in doing is putting themselves to sleep, while contrary Bernard continues to insist he is not tired-until the house becomes so quiet that he gets into bed and goes to sleep on his own. Pastel illustrations depict an appealing elephant family whose members barely fit on the pages. A palette of rich, muted tropical hues adds interest to an average text.-Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library
