Gramophone - Edward Greenfield
Any listener on whichever side of the fence who keeps any sort of open mind...must recognize this historic [CD] as superb entertainment and great music-making on every level, with an emotional impact closely akin to that of a Puccini opera and an intensity of excitement to match anything from disco to The Rite of Spring.... The beauty of [Te Kanawa's] voice, its combination of richness, delicacy and purity, consistently brings out the musical strengths of Bernstein's inspiration.... Similarly with Jose Carreras as Tony it is self-evident to point out how such a voice brings out the pure beauty of the big melodies like ''Maria'' or ...

BBC Music Magazine - Katina Ellery
A fascinating insight into the work of a master composer/conductor at the height of his powers, as well as an interesting look at the recording process itself. [The documentary] is full of entertaining and sublime moments and captures the exhilaration and frustration of the performers in equal parts.

I saw a TV program about the making of this version of WSS many years ago. Bernstein had Carreras in tears because Carreras wanted to do another take and Berstein said the last was fine. I missed seeing the tryout in Philadelphia before WSS went to Broadway "who wants to see a modern day Romeo and Juliet". I have since seen the show as many as 200 times in all media and listened to it by all types of artists. My absolute favorite is this version being played and sung in the manner which Berstein intended it. My understanding of the story being that it would never had such a success on Broadway had it originally been presented in this form. "Again, Who wants to see a modern day Romeo and Juliet?" As much as I love Porgy and Bess, Show Boat, My Fair Lady, South Pacific and on and on. This is my favorite version of the WSS music.
