Overview

When Leonard Bernstein was just starting out, it was unthinkable that a composer of Broadway musicals would be taken seriously by classical audiences. Of course, Bernstein had his cake and ate it too, going on to become revered as a conductor, while he wrote brilliant and influential musicals such as On the Town, West Side Story, and Candide. And in doing so, he paved the way for many young, classically trained musicians who simply refuse to be confined to the classics. Joshua Bell is one of these artists, and on this ingenious program, he has created a wonderful tribute to Bernstein, including a new suite for violin and orchestra (by the Tony Award-winning arranger William David Brohn) that draws on the most popular tunes from West Side Story. This is an effective and substantial work, lasting some 20 minutes, that gives Bell plenty of opportunity to show off his stunning technique and singing tone. Bell also offers a bracing performance of one of Bernstein's finest symphonic works, the Serenade after Plato's "Symposium". Other arrangements from Bernstein's Broadway classics fill out the program: "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide, with "Lonely Town" and "New York, New York" from On the Town. David Zinman elicits zesty playing from London's Philharmonia Orchestra, and the recorded sound is immediate and detailed. Lenny would have loved this.
