Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This is the 10th edition of a book first published in 1955 devoted to perioperative patient care. The authors state "Berry and Kohn's Operating Room Technique has been the perioperative text of choice for more than 48 years. . .." I can say that it is very comprehensive! The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The book "is designed to meet the needs of educators, learners, and personnel who care for surgical or interventional patients in many diverse environments. Knowing the 'why' of patient care is as important as knowing the 'how.' A strong emphasis is placed on understanding the rationale behind each patient care activity." These are worthy objectives and very well met.
Audience: Students in a specialized course focusing on perioperative nursing will find this book an excellent resource, as will their instructors. Every perioperative area should have this book on the shelf for reference. Hospital and nursing school libraries will find this an excellent addition. The authors are credible. At first I was concerned because the authors and consultants are all from the same geographic location, but the four reviewers are from other places in the United States.
Features: The technical aspects of perioperative nursing are covered in depth. Additional information is also included on spiritual and psychological considerations, special needs patient care, 2002 AORN Standards: Recommended Practices and Guidelines, computer use, and role of surgical first assistant. There are many line drawn illustrations, all in blue. The print quality is good but photos and additional color would add value (the bright blue tongue is distracting). Content is summarized in boxes and tables.
Assessment: This is a superb textbook for anyone interested in learning perioperative nursing or as a reference in an area where perioperative patient care takes place. This latest edition is warranted because of the new standards for practice and the constantly changing technology. Even though this is a specialty text, it is written in understandable language and includes many topics in addition to the specific surgical techniques.
