More About This Book

Overview

The year is 1917. Gaston DeLuca, an Italian immigrant, recruited to work in the coal mines of Pennsylvania has finally saved up enough money to send for his wife,
Rosa and their six year old daughter Berta. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned. Speaking no English and with very little money Rosa and Berta make the harrowing journey from their small village outside of Genoa, Italy to Ellis Island and embark on a poignant journey of survival in New York City, a cruel yet wondrous place. World War I, the influenza epidemic of 1918, prohibition and the culture of the roaring twenties impact their lives in ways that will have readers turning pages well into the night.

Terry Suchanek is first time novelist. She lives in Western Massachusetts with her husband and two children. She is a registered nurse and works in a rehabilitation facility as a staff development coordinator and infection control specialist. She is an avid reader of history and fiction. The inspiration for the book, Berta DeLuca, came from learning about her maternal grandfather's arrival at Ellis Island as a young boy during the early part of the twentieth century.

What readers are saying...

"Berta DeLuca is fast-paced, historical fiction at its finest. I couldn't put it down!"

"Characters you'll love, characters you'll love to hate and characters you won't soon forget. Berta DeLuca had me hooked. I can't wait to get my hands on Book Two of the Angels on Earth Series."

"I almost called in sick to work so I could keep reading...now that's a good book!"

"Berta DeLuca is heartbreaking, haunting, funny at times and informative... but most of all, worth reading. I didn't want it to end."

"WARNING: This book is like a pit bull- it'll get hold of you and won't let you go!"

This is a masterful debut novel; a coming of age story that's poignant and real. It's well written in a style that's straight forward with amazing in-depth characters. It's a page turner for sure.

    Mesmerizing! Awsome read!

I am not an avid reader, but, when a book grabs my attention from the very beginning and takes my breath away to the very end. Wow! I simply could not put it down. Extremely well written. My only question is "how long am I going to have to wait for the next book because I want to read it NOW!"

This historical fiction novel is amazing as it is action packed and full of  unexpected twists and turns.
There are characters that you grow to love and hate as they come to life. The story keeps you
on the edge of your seat. I am anxiously awaiting Book 2 to see what becomes of Berta.
It wouldn't me surprise me to see this story as a movie as there is so much realistic drama and excitement.
The author has beautifully written this engaging tale.

    LOVED THIS BOOK!

The historical accuracy and details in this book make it a must read. I felt like I was right there with these characters and the way their separate stories intertwined with one another made it so interesting. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and recommend it to everyone. All of us here in the United States are decendants of immigrants, it makes you wonder what struggles they may have endured.

Brilliant! Berta DeLuca is powerful saga of love and survival. Suchanek's artfully spun tale takes the reader on a perfectly paced journey starting with the heroine's arrival at Ellis Island as a child in 1917 through the roaring twenties with plot twists that will surprise even the most astute reader. It's an inspiring story with characters that are so richly drawn you'll be thinking about them long after you turn the last page; I still miss them. Berta DeLuca is destined to become a classic. I can't wait to get my hands on Book Two of the Angels on Earth Series!

This is a beautifully written novel that pulls you in from the first
page and keeps you wanting to know how things turn out for the main
characters. Berta DeLuca has universal appeal. Even though this story
was based in New York City, it brought to mind stories of my mother's
childhood in the industrial city of Lynn, MA, near Boston during the
1920s, 1930s and 1940s. I will anxiously await the next book in this
    series. Mary Harrington McLellan
