Overview

After Franz Liszt read through the score of Franz Berwald's A Major Piano Quintet, he wrote to his colleague: "You truly possess originality, but you will not enjoy success in your lifetime." Sadly, Liszt's words were all too prophetic. It wasn't until the advent of long-playing records that Berwald (1796-1868) developed a following, thanks in large part to the valiant efforts of Antal Dorati, Sixten Ehrling, and others. These piano quintets capture the Swedish composer at his quirky best, with harmonic progressions that veer off in unexpected directions and peculiar melodies that ramble endearingly. One can hear many echoes of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Schumann in both these works, as well as startling portents of Brahms and Dvorák, but Berwald's own voice always shines through. The Uppsala Chamber Soloists and pianist Bengt-Åke Lundin dig into the music with gusto, relishing all its delightful eccentricities. With a clean, clear recording and a very reasonable price tag, this is an unexpected treat for lovers of romantic chamber music.
