Overview

The simply named Best Alternative delivers on the alternative rock it promises, mixing pop, punk and indie rock with a distinctly British leaning. The collection features lots of Britpop, including Supergrass' "Caught by the Fuzz," the Divine Comedy's "I've Been to a Marvelous Party," and one of Blur's weakest songs, "Mr. Briggs." Although the album flits through the '80s, '90s and '00s somewhat randomly, Gomez's "Whippin' Piccadilly," Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It" and Dubstar's "Not So Manic Now" are some of the standout tracks. Mansun, Terrorvision, Starsailor and Supernaturals are some of the other bands that give Best Alternative an unmistakably British flavor. It's not the most impressive collection of Britpop and its connected styles, but it might still be worthwhile for die-hard Anglophiles.
