Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristy Lyn Sutorius
Kiddie carbuffs and future speed hounds have not gotten enough of this title. Originally published in 2002 as a hardcover and now re-released as a paperback, this survey of speed machines has not lost its appeal. Land, air, and water machines are each given their due. From France's record-breaking TGV wheeled trail to the recently retired Concorde, kids will feel the rush sitting in the comfort of their homes or classrooms. Lesser know vehicles, such as the recumbent bike or new space planes, also grace the pages. Some readers may be disappointed that the author does not address the "risk factor" or high-speed crashes, but their hearts will be thumping regardless. Top performers from various manufacturers are singled out by name with a corresponding drawing. Bergin's illustrations do a great job of conveying motion, a difficult feat when drawing the fastest vehicles in the world. A comprehensive glossary and an index are included for those searching for information about specific machines. Reviewer: Kristy Lyn Sutorius
