Overview

Best Books for Middle School and Junior High Readers, Grades 6–9: Supplement to the Second Edition is perfect for helping teachers, parents, librarians, and young adults identify the books that will be most suitable for students' educational needs and provide enjoyable recreational reading. This up-to-date reading guide for middle school and junior high reading materials is a valuable resource for both collection development and creation of theme-related bibliographic lists. It covers nearly 2,000 titles published between 2009 and early 2011, the majority of which have been recommended by at least two reviewing journals. Entries provide annotations with succinct plot summaries, review citations, reading level, and essential bibliographic information such as price, ISBN, and number of pages.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Pam Carlson
When I searched under "Contemporary Life — Juvenile Fiction" in my library's catalog, one of the three titles listed was Moccasin Thunder: American Indian Stories for Today. Compare this to just two of the almost 160 titles listed under "Contemporary Life and Problems" in this supplement: Mark Fink's The Summer I Got a Life or K. L. Going's King of the Screwups. There is a clear winner as to which is most helpful to a librarian helping a student find just the right book for an assignment on this topic or locating other books which do not always match catalog subject entries. The titles in this supplement range in date from 2008 to early 2010. Each was carefully screened, needing two positive reviews in order to be included. Although Best Books is aimed at a designated age group, titles for younger and older readers are included in order to provide something for every reading level. Listings include publishing information, suggested grade level, short annotation, Lexile level, review citations, and Dewey numbers as applicable. Most helpful is the inclusion of both fiction and non-fiction books. There are just under 2000 titles altogether. Author, title, and subject/grade level indexes bring this most helpful work to a fitting finish. Up-to-date titles will assist librarians in modernizing their own collections. If there is a need for a teen volunteer project, assign them to compare this list against the library catalog to discover which titles are lacking. Reviewer: Pam Carlson
